The General Slocum Tragedy

Over the years, Grandma Ohl recounted being on the General Slocum when it burned. At the time of the accident, June 15, 1904, the Slocum was on a chartered run carrying members of the St. Mark's Lutheran Evangelical Church (German Americans from Little Germany, Manhattan) to a church picnic. This was an annual rite for the group for 17 consecutive years. Passengers were mostly women and children. On that day, the Slocum caught fire and sank in the East River of New York City. When it sank, 1021 people either burned to death or drowned, there were only 321 survivors.
Grandma Ohl felt and shared how this tragedy impacted her entire life resulting in a battle with depression and a constant sense of melancholy. She would have just turned two years old when the calamity occurred with her loosing many cousins and family members which understandably haunted her. One can only imagine the trauma this horrible memory caused her entire family over the years.
A 1905 census confirms Grandma resided in Manhattan, NY. Church records confirm Grandma Ohl's mother was a member of the Lutheran church which my mother was, too.
