Pfc. Edwin Parrett, 20, of 1654 Commercial, Atchison, KS, has been awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received November 29th, 1944 while in combat in Germany, according to word received by his parents.
Also awarded the the Bronze Star because of bravery in action, and the Combat Infantry badge. Pfc Parrett has been serving overseas since September of 1944.

The Bronze Star medal has been awarded to Pfc Edwin R. Parrett, 20, and the citation was received yesterday by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. L.R. Parrett of 1654 Commercial, Atchison, KS.
The citation read "For heroic achievement in connection with military operations against the enemy in Germany, November 29th, 1944. When fire from an enemy machine gun had temporarily halted the advance of his company, Pfc Parrett together with two other soldiers without regard for his own safety assaulted the position, killed two Germans and put the gun out of action. The individual bravery and exemplary action of Pfc Parrett reflect the highest credit upon himself and the armed forces of the United States. He is now a Sergeant. His promotion followed his Bronze Star award.
Sgt. Parrett, a member of the 335 infantry was slightly wounded in action on that day and was hospitalized for a month. However, since the first 1945 he has been back on the front lines. He is with General Courtney Hodges' First army and in his last letter home he wrote he was in the middle of the First armies big drive.
Going oversees in September, 1944, Sgt Parrett went into action on November 10th. He received basic training in anti-aircraft at Camp Wallace, Texas after his induction at Fort Leavenworth on July 26th, 1943. He received his infantry training at Camp Clairborne, Louisiana and was home on furlough in July, 1944.
Sgt. Parrett is a 1943 graduate of Atchison High School and before his induction into the service was employed at the Miller Drugstore and the Berry Hatchery. He has been awarded a number of medals for outstanding marksmanship and has also been awarded the Distinguished Expert Infantryman Badge and Good Conduct ribbon.

Edwin Roy (Ed) Parrett passed away May 27, 2006 at St Lukes hospital in Kansas City, Missouri. He was born in Atchison, Kansas, January 16, 1925, the son of Leeroy and Helen Bewley Parrett. He was employed by Southwestern Bell in Atchison for 37 years and was a member and officer of the Carriage and Driving Society of Greater Kansas City.
He served in WWII in the ETO with the 84th Infantry Division. He was twice decorated for heroic achievement. While serving in Germany, he received the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.
Edwin married Ruth Cora Ohl on May 17, 1948, in Sayre, Pennyslvania. Edwin and Ruth had three daughters, Sally (John) Kram of Leavenworth, Kansas, Susan (Jerry) Ingels,of Gladstone, Missouri, and Betty Jo, (Kevin), Pickett of Lansing, Kansas: Two sons, Edward (Connie) Parrett, of Leavenworth, Kansas and Richard (Cheryl) Parrett, of Mission, Kansas. Ruth preceded him in death on Sept. 15, 1975.
In April, 1977 he married Martha J. Wahaus.
Survivers include his wife Martha of the home, daughters Sally, Susan, and Betty .Jo (BJ), sons Edward (Bud) and Richard (Boo), two sisters Kathleen Whitaker and Helen Lund, both of Atchison, eleven grandchildren, and fourteen great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Jean Shell and Joyce Paulsen.
He was a resident of Atchison and attended schools there. He moved to Leavenworth County in 1985.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 P.M. Tuesday, May, 30, 2006 at the Davis Funeral Chapel, Leavenworth. Funeral Services will be held 11:30 A.M. Wednesday, May 31, 2006 at the funeral chapel. The Rev. Dr. Raymond C. Hartjen will officiate. Memorial contributions may be given to the Trinity Episcopal Church of Atchison.
