DEATH TAKES J.S. BEWLEY
Native of England and Resident of Atchison Many Years
Joseph S."Joe" Bewley, 65, died at 12:50 o'clock this morning at his home at 1411 Utah avenue after an illness of more then one year. Mr. Bewley had been bedfast for the last four months and critically ill the last several weeks.
The death of Joe Bewley as he was known to his many friends in Atchison and Northeast Kansas, marks the passing of one of Atchison's finest citizens. A resident of Atchison for nearly 40 years he made hundreds of friends through his business dealings and social contacts. He had a pleasant and agreeable personality and was liked by everyone who knew him.
Mr. Bewley was first ill a year ago last month. His illness was diagnosed as heart and kidney trouble, but did not become serious enough to keep him from his work until six months ago. He had been confined to his bed for the last four months and during that time kept up his same genial spirit. He was most patient during his illness and always had a smile for visitors.
Joseph Scott Bewley was born at Huer Hill, England, July 20, 1865. He came to this country when he was a youth of 15 years, but returned to England after a years stay in the states. Two years later he went from England to Canada, where he remained until he was 21 years of age. He then came to Atchison and lived here the rest of his life with the exception of 10 years spent on a farm near Whiting.
For 26 years Mr. Bewley worked as a superintendent for the Barry Brick Co. here. The company had its brick yards on the Mt. Vernon cemetery road south of town. The last six years he had been working for the Barry Coal Co. as a salesman and general utility man. He had a splendid reputation with business men in Atchison and the men who had worked for him at the brick yard.
In October 1890, Mr. Bewley married Miss Anna Cline of Atchison. Eight children were born to them, seven of whom survive along with Mrs. Bewley. They are: three daughters, Mrs. A. J. Parrott and L.R. Parrott both of Atchison: Mrs. John DeBusk of Soldier, Kas; four sons, J.J. Bewley and R.C. Bewley of Atchison; C.R. Bewley and L.C. Bewley both of Arrington, Kas. One daughter, Agnes died at the age of three months. Other surviving relatives;A half-sister, Mrs. James Turnbull of England, and two half-brothers, Jacob and Isaac Stewart, both of Sidney, Australia. Twelve grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon (Sunday) at 2:30 o'clock from the home of Mr. Bewley's daughter, Mrs. A.J. Parrott, at 1423 Commercial street. The Rev. Benjamin Smith of Trinity Episcopal church of which Mr. Bewley was a member, will conduct the services.
Burial will be in Mt. Vernon cemetery. Sawin & Douglass will be in charge.
Active pallbearers will be; Gene Martin, Leon Downer, Ray Williams, John Ames, Archer Ware, and Roy Hood. Honorary pallbearers will be; Wirt Hetherington, Will Edmiston, Andy Andrews, Harry Stevens, John Ratherman, and Will Paradise.
